What Worked? My students are technologically savvy! Initially I was concerned because we were introducing a new method of technology after we had begun the year. To my surprised the students caught on quickly, and before I knew it they were helping me find additional creative ways to incorporate the use of technology.
While I have only shared a portion of what we have done in our class, I am convinced that integrating technology across the curriculum: increases student engagement, students' self esteem, which resulted in a decrease in guided support, and ultimately creating a more collaborative community amongst the learners. Additionally, it is a timeless vehicle for parent/teacher communication.
Changes This year was a year of growth for me. I looped up from fourth grade with few of my students. I went from departmentalized to a self contained classroom teacher, teaching all subjects. I started this year with one goal, and that was to publish a classroom blog. However, as the year went on I became overwhelmed with "all things new (i.g. grade level, curriculum, students, technology, and expectations)!" I found myself scattering my thoughts which only caused greater frustration.
Thinking Ahead There are several things that I will do differently for next year. *I will start right away at the beginning of the year. I realize that the students are ready and can handle most tasks. *Focus on one or two applications/programs at a time and integrate them in various subject areas. *I will not be afraid to try again if it does not go right on the first try. *Appoint student technology ambassadors. These students will be your support when new students arrive mid-year helping to ensure your new students is all set. *Use it everyday! *Do not underestimate your skill set. *Share your success stories with other colleagues!!
